Whilst The Arts Society Cardiff is open to all and we are usually very happy to welcome new members, at present we are full and unable to accept any applications.  If you would like to join the society please email us at theartssocietycardiff@gmail.com and we will put you on the waiting list.

The committee is currently looking for community-based arts projects or volunteering opportunities to support.  If you know of any projects or have any ideas or suggestions for setting one up please let us know by contacting us at cardiff@theartssociety.org or speak to any member of the committee. In addition if any members would like to help with the runing of the society, perhaps by assisting with one of the projects we support, please also contact us.

Tim Rudge and Carole Jones were delighted to deliver a range of art books to Herbert Thompson Primary School Ely on 28th June. A selection of enthusiastic readers with the Headmistress, Mrs Sheena Marsh and the school's Literacy Lead, Miss Emma Summerhayes accepted the donation on behalf of the school. The books will be part of the new school library which has recently been opened. It was a boost to the library stock as it lacked good quality books on arts related subjects.

5th to 16th April 2023

An exhibition of pictures by Arts Society Cardiff member Lysbeth Davies will be held in the Cardiff Story Museum, The Old Library, The Hayes, Cardiff CF10 1BH from 5th to 16th April 2023. The exhibition is being supported by the British Red Cross and all profits from the sale of the artworks will be donated to them.

The Cutting Edge Textile Group, based in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, was established
twelve years ago and has evolved into a vibrant group of talented individuals. It is an informal and welcoming group with an ethos of sharing knowledge and expertise. Over the years members have been involved in a number of projects to support charitable causes and to mark special events. Such projects offer the opportunity for collaboration and at the same time provide much pleasure and enjoyment. 

After a long pause in creativity following the isolation of COVID lockdowns, Cutting Edge members were keen to come together to work on a project to create a quilt which celebrated the remarkable achievements of women in Wales. Each member was invited to create a quilt block depicting a woman of their choice from the past or present who, in their view, had made a remarkable contribution to Welsh society. A quilt would then be created with a view to displaying it on International Women’s Day – 8 March 2023. 35 of the 42 members chose to create a block and others offered their help to assemble the quilt – a truly wonderful team effort.

Some of the women depicted in the quilt currently reside in Wales and have been members of the local community, so it seemed appropriate to display the quilt locally. The Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice has always been a great supporter of the group and, as the founder of the charity features on the quilt, it was agreed that it could be displayed in Ty Hafan's Cowbridge shop window from 6th to 19th March 2023.  It will then be displayed at Barry Library (21st April - 12th May 2023) Studio 40 Gallery Neath (1-29th July 2023) and finally be permanently hung in St John’s Museum, Bridgend. The quilt is accompanied by a folder in which the history of each square of the quilt is explained.

The Arts Society Cardiff is one of the twenty societies in The West Mercia Area who bring people together through a shared interest in the arts.

The Art Societies in the Area have joined together to compile a book of 50 lesser known artistic objects and places. All societies in the Area were invited to suggest lesser known treasures. The Cardiff society’s three submissions were accepted, namely the Bute Mausoleum in St. Margaret’s Church Roath, Medieval Wall Paintings in St.Cadoc’s Church, Llancarfan and a Silver Mace, which pre-dates the mace in the House of Commons, and can be seen in The Guildhall, Llantrisant. There are many treasures to explore in this large geographical area, from Bristol to St.Davids in Pembrokeshire; included is a map to guide visitors through the counties.

The book is illustrated with colour images throughout, with up to date information for visiting, access arrangements, websites and contact details. It is an indispensable resource whether your interest is Victorian industrial archaeology , Worcester porcelain, the Arts and Crafts movement or present day street art. It could also be an ideal gift for a friend.

Like many other arts institutions, Chapter Arts Centre, Canton, Cardiff, was badly affected financially by the COVID-induced closure of such institutions.  The Arts Society Cardiff provided funding to assist Chapter during this period.
